Steam Capsule Sizes & Image Validator
Every Steam capsule dimension in one table, plus a drag-and-drop validator that checks your file against them. Header 920x430, Small 462x174, Main 1232x706, Vertical 748x896, Library 600x900.

Supports JPG, PNG (max 2MB). Checked in your browser -- nothing is uploaded to a server.
Correct dimensions are the floor, not the bar. The analyzer reads your live capsule the way a shopper does -- whether it says what the game is at thumbnail size -- alongside the rest of the page.
Steam Capsule Sizes: Full Dimensions Reference (2026)
These are the current Steamworks upload dimensions. Valve moved to 2x assets so capsules stay sharp on high-DPI displays, and the older 1x sizes below are what those images are downscaled to in most surfaces. If you are exporting fresh art, export at the upload size in the first column.
| Capsule Type | Upload Size | Legacy 1x Size | Aspect Ratio | Where It Appears |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Header Capsule | 920 x 430 | 460 x 215 | 2.14:1 | Store page hero, home-page recommendations, Big Picture mode |
| Small Capsule | 462 x 174 | 231 x 87, 184 x 69, 120 x 45 | 2.66:1 | Search results, Top Sellers lists, wishlist rows, curator lists |
| Main Capsule | 1232 x 706 | 616 x 353 | 1.75:1 | Front-page featured carousel, daily deals, sale-event features |
| Vertical Capsule | 748 x 896 | 374 x 448 | 0.83:1 | Seasonal sale pages and vertical promotional layouts |
| Library Capsule | 600 x 900 | 300 x 450 | 0.67:1 | The player's own Steam library grid, after they buy |
All five accept JPG or PNG up to 2MB. The validator above accepts a legacy 1x file with a warning rather than a failure, because plenty of shipped games still have them -- but a new upload should be 2x.
What Each Steam Capsule Is For
Header Capsule — 920 x 430px
Top of the store page, recommendations, Big Picture
The one capsule every game must have. It is the image most players see first, so it has to carry the logo legibly at half size.
Legacy 1x: 460 x 215
Small Capsule — 462 x 174px
Search results, top sellers, and wishlists
Renders as small as 120x45 in some lists. Logo-only or logo-plus-one-character is usually the only thing that survives at that size.
Legacy 1x: 231 x 87, 184 x 69, 120 x 45
Main Capsule — 1232 x 706px
Front-page featured carousel and sale features
Only shown if Valve features you, but you cannot be featured without it. Upload it before launch rather than scrambling during a sale.
Legacy 1x: 616 x 353
Vertical Capsule — 748 x 896px
Seasonal sale pages and vertical promo layouts
Portrait orientation, so it needs its own composition rather than a crop of the header. Reserve vertical space for the logo.
Legacy 1x: 374 x 448
Library Capsule — 600 x 900px
Steam library grid view
A 2:3 poster. It is what an owner sees every time they scroll their library, so treat it as retention art, not acquisition art.
Legacy 1x: 300 x 450
Correct Dimensions Are the Easy Half
Getting the pixel dimensions right takes one export. The harder problem is that the small capsule can render as little as 120x45px in search results and wishlist rows, and most capsule art is designed at full size on a large monitor where it looks fine. A title set in a 14px-equivalent font at 462x174 is unreadable by the time Steam scales it down.
Across the 373 Steam store pages our analyzer has scored, "small capsule readability at thumbnail scale" is the single most common issue we flag — it appears on 52 pages, and readability variants together are the number-one theme overall. Capsule issues show up on 85.8% of the pages analyzed. (That is a convenience sample of pages developers chose to run through the free analyzer, not a random sample of Steam, and the scores are our own AI rubric rather than a Valve metric.)
The cheap test: export your small capsule, scale it to 120x45 in any image editor, and look at it from normal viewing distance. If you cannot read the title, neither can a browsing player. Then check the dimensions with the validator above so the file itself is not the problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Steam capsule sizes?
Steam uses five capsule images. The current Steamworks upload sizes are: Header Capsule 920x430px, Small Capsule 462x174px, Main Capsule 1232x706px, Vertical Capsule 748x896px, and Library Capsule 600x900px. All five accept JPG or PNG up to 2MB.
What size is the Steam header capsule?
The Steam header capsule uploads at 920x430px. That is the 2x asset; it renders at 460x215px in most surfaces. It appears at the top of your store page, in home-page recommendations, and in Big Picture mode, and it is the only capsule every game is required to have.
What are the Steam capsule dimensions for the small capsule?
The small capsule uploads at 462x174px. It is downscaled aggressively in practice, appearing at 231x87px, 184x69px, and as small as 120x45px in search results, Top Sellers lists, and wishlist rows. Design the art to stay readable at 120x45px, not at full size.
What is the Steam library capsule size?
The Steam library capsule is 600x900px, a 2:3 portrait poster. It is what a player sees in their own library grid after buying the game, so it affects whether owners come back to it rather than whether new players click.
Can I still use the old 460x215 Steam capsule size?
Existing games with legacy 1x assets still display, but Steamworks asks for the 2x sizes for new uploads so capsules stay sharp on high-DPI displays. This validator accepts legacy sizes such as 460x215, 231x87, 616x353, 374x448, and 300x450 with a warning rather than a failure, and tells you the 2x size to export instead.
What file format and file size does Steam require for capsules?
Steam accepts JPG or PNG for capsule images, up to 2MB per file. PNG is the safer choice for art with flat colour or crisp logo edges; JPG is usually smaller for photographic or heavily painted art. The validator checks format and file size alongside dimensions.
Do capsule dimensions affect how many people click my game?
Wrong dimensions get rejected or letterboxed, but correct dimensions do not by themselves make a capsule work. Across the 373 Steam store pages our analyzer has scored, readability at thumbnail scale is the most common capsule problem we flag, appearing on 52 pages. Validate the file, then check the art is legible at 120x45px.
