Steam Winter Sale 2026 Dates: Rules and a Dev Prep Plan

The Steam Winter Sale 2026 runs December 17 to January 4, 2027, per Steamworks. Cooldown deadlines, Steam Awards timing, and a prep plan working back from mid-December.

The Steam Winter Sale 2026 runs December 17, 2026 through January 4, 2027. That is official: Valve published the full second-half schedule on the Steamworks upcoming events page, so for once you are not planning around a leak. It is also the longest sale of the year at 18 days, and it lands inside the highest-grossing month Steam has ever had.

The dates are the easy part. What actually decides whether the sale works for you happens in November: your discount has to clear the 30-day cooldown rules, and one badly timed price change can block it outright. This post covers the verified 2026 dates, the eligibility math, and a prep checklist that works backward from December 17, plus what the year-end spike is actually worth.

The official 2026 Winter Sale dates

Here is the full 2026 seasonal calendar as listed on the Steamworks events schedule. Valve’s seasonal sales have historically started and ended at 10am Pacific; the schedule confirms dates, not times, so treat the hour as the usual pattern rather than a promise.

Two things stand out in that chart. The Winter Sale is more than twice as long as Autumn, which changes how you think about pacing: an 18-day sale has a launch-day spike, a long quiet middle, a Christmas bump when new gift cards get spent, and a final-48-hours surge. And the gap between Autumn (ends October 8) and Winter (starts December 17) is 10 weeks, which matters for the cooldown planning below.

We keep every one of these dates, plus the themed fests between them, updated in the Steam sale calendar, and the full-year picture with registration deadlines is in our 2026 sales events guide.

Note

Participation in seasonal sales is automatic in the sense that any eligible discount you schedule for the window puts you in the sale. Valve opens seasonal sale scheduling in the Steamworks discount dashboard weeks ahead and emails partners; there is no application to write, but there is a scheduling deadline each cycle, so do not leave it for sale week.

Why the Winter Sale is the year’s biggest spending event

December is when Steam prints money. In December 2025, Steam did roughly $1.6 billion in gross revenue, its highest-grossing month ever and 22.7% above December 2024, per Alinea Analytics estimates reported by TechSpot. Those are third-party estimates, not Valve’s books, but the direction is not in dispute: the Winter Sale window is the peak of the PC spending year, fed by holiday gift cards, new hardware under the tree, and people with two weeks off work.

Valve’s own numbers, shared in a rare business update and covered by GameDiscover, show the seasonal sales growing year over year:

Seasonal sale revenue growth, 2023 vs 2022
Summer Sale23%
Autumn Sale17%
Winter Sale13%
Source: Valve data presented in a Steam Business Update at Nordic Game, via GameDiscover (2024)

Per the same Valve presentation, Autumn and Winter are the top sales by daily revenue, and Winter wins on total revenue because it runs so much longer. The Winter Sale’s 13% growth is the smallest bar on that chart only because it grows from the biggest base.

For an individual game, the sale mostly cashes in work you did earlier. Seasonal sales are when accumulated wishlists convert: shoppers get a discount notification email for every wishlisted game that goes on sale, and the Winter Sale sends the year’s biggest batch of those emails. If you spent 2026 building a wishlist balance, December 17 is the single best day of the year for it to pay out. Our wishlist conversion data covers what conversion rates to expect; the short version is that a seasonal discount email to a warm wishlist outperforms almost any marketing you can buy.

The Summer Sale is the only comparable event. Winter has the same discount mechanics, a longer window, and more disposable money in the audience’s pocket, so if you can only prepare properly for one of the two, prepare for Winter.

The Steam Awards run inside the sale

The Steam Awards run through the Winter Sale and put extra store traffic on specific pages, which makes them worth ten minutes of planning.

The 2026 process has not been announced yet, so here is the verified 2025 pattern. Nominations opened November 24 and closed December 1, 2025 as a standalone event, per Valve’s announcement. Finalists were revealed when the Winter Sale started, and community voting ran through the sale, ending January 3 with winners announced right after.

One planning note that trips up people working from older guides: nominations used to run during the Autumn Sale, back when that sale sat over the US Thanksgiving week. The Autumn Sale has since moved to early October (October 1-8 in 2026), so the nomination window is now decoupled from any sale. Expect a late-November nomination window in 2026, and treat the exact dates as not yet announced.

What can a small dev actually do with this?

  • Ask for nominations when the window opens. A community post, a Discord ping, and an in-game mention are all allowed. You are not going to beat the year’s blockbusters in Game of the Year, but categories like “Labor of Love” (for updated older games) and the sit-back or friend-focused categories have gone to smaller titles before.
  • Nominations feed a visibility loop. Players who nominate your game are prompted to interact with your page, and the awards hub itself is a browsing surface during the sale’s opening days.
  • Do not build your plan around winning. Treat the awards as a free community beat during the sale, not a strategy.

Discount eligibility: the cooldown math for December 17

This is the section that saves launches. Steam’s discount rules are enforced by the dashboard, and if you get the timing wrong there is no appeal. Everything below is from the Steamworks discounting documentation, checked in early July 2026; the full rulebook with examples is in our discount rules guide.

The rules that decide your Winter Sale eligibility:

RuleWhat it means for December 17
30-day discount cooldownDoes NOT apply to seasonal sales. A custom discount ending in early December does not block your Winter Sale discount.
30-day rule after releaseYour game must be released by November 17, 2026 to run a Winter Sale discount (launch discounts are their own mechanism).
30-day rule after a price increaseNo price increase in ANY currency after November 17, 2026, or your Winter discount is blocked. No exceptions.
Discount rangeCustom and seasonal discounts run 10-95% off.

The seasonal exemption is the part most people half-remember. The standard rule is 30 days between discounts, but the four seasonal sales are exempt in both directions: they neither require a 30-day gap before them nor impose one after. Practically, that means you can run a Halloween-adjacent custom discount, participate in a themed fest in November, and still take your full Winter Sale discount. What the exemption does not cover is the release cooldown and the price-increase cooldown. Those always apply.

The price-increase rule is the one that quietly kills Winter Sale plans. It covers a price increase in any single currency, so a well-meaning regional price adjustment in late November - say, correcting an underpriced currency after a Valve pricing-matrix update - blocks your discount worldwide for 30 days. If your regional prices need work, do it in October. Run your numbers through the regional pricing calculator and read the regional pricing guide before you touch anything after Halloween.

Warning

Mark November 17 in your calendar now. It is both the last safe release date for Winter Sale discount eligibility and the last safe day to raise any price in any currency. Miss it and you spend the biggest sale of the year at full price.

How deep to discount

The Winter Sale does not have a special discount formula; it has the same tradeoffs as every sale, at higher traffic. A few rules of thumb from our discount strategy guide:

  • Match or beat your deepest previous discount. Shoppers and deal trackers see your discount history on SteamDB. A Winter Sale discount shallower than your Autumn Sale discount reads as a skip.
  • Standard first-year ladder: if you launched in 2026 with a 10-20% launch discount, a first Winter Sale at 20-35% is the common range. Games two or more years old typically sit at 50%+ by their second or third Winter Sale.
  • Round numbers only. 30%, not 27%. Steam’s deal surfaces and third-party trackers bucket by round percentages.
  • Bundles amplify a sale discount. A complete-the-set bundle with your DLC or a partner game stacks visible savings without deepening the base discount. Setup takes days, not hours, so it belongs in November; see the bundle strategy guide.

One thing you should not do during the sale window: change your base price. Any increase blocks future discounts for 30 days, and a decrease mid-sale mostly generates refund requests from people who bought at the higher sale price.

Launching during the Winter Sale

The standard advice says never launch during a seasonal sale because you cannot take a normal discount and the front page belongs to deals. Chris Zukowski made the opposite case with January 2026 data: very few games ship during the Winter Sale window, so the New & Trending and Popular Upcoming widgets have dramatically less competition while the store has dramatically more visitors. His tracking put the median stay on Popular Upcoming at 1 day and on New & Trending at 4 days during that stretch, and his featured case study (How Many Dudes) went from 8,387 wishlists on December 18 to 150,292 by January 31, a gain of 141,905, driven by front-page placement plus demo pickup.

That is one month of data and one standout case, so treat it as an interesting option rather than a proven play. The tradeoffs are real: a game released after November 17 cannot run a Winter Sale discount, launch-window revenue competes with 90%-off back-catalog deals, and press and creators are on holiday. But if your game is free, demo-led, or strong enough to ride New & Trending on full-price sales, launching into the quietest release calendar of the year is no longer an obviously bad idea. Weigh it against the standard windows in our best launch dates guide.

The prep checklist, working backward from December 17

Here is the timeline I would actually run. Dates assume the confirmed December 17 start.

DeadlineTask
October 1-8Use the Autumn Sale as your dress rehearsal: run a discount, record traffic, conversion, and revenue as your baseline.
By October 31Finalize regional pricing. Any currency you need to raise must be raised well before mid-November.
By November 10Decide your Winter discount depth. Check your discount history on SteamDB so you do not undercut your own precedent. Build any bundles now.
November 17Hard deadline: last day to release with Winter discount eligibility, last day for any price increase in any currency.
Late NovemberSchedule your seasonal discount as soon as Valve opens the dashboard window. If the Steam Awards nomination window opens (late November if 2025’s pattern holds), ask your community to nominate.
By December 10Page pass: current screenshots, trailer, short description, and tags. Sale traffic is cold traffic; your page does the selling. Run the store page checklist.
December 17Sale live. Post a community announcement, ping your Discord and mailing list. Wishlist discount emails go out automatically.
December 20-27Ship a small content or patch update if you have one ready and pair it with a visibility round to catch the gift-card wave.
January 2-4Final-days push: “last chance” community post. The closing surge is real; do not go dark.
January 5+Pull the numbers against your Autumn baseline while they are fresh. This becomes your planning data for 2027.

The theme of the whole table: everything that determines your Winter Sale outcome is locked by mid-November. December is execution.

Before the sale, it is worth knowing whether your page converts cold traffic at all - an 18-day sale multiplies whatever conversion rate you already have, good or bad. Run your page through the free Steam Page Analyzer to find the weak spots while there is still time to fix them, and keep the sale calendar open so none of the dates above sneak up on you.
