Shop keeping is the fastest-filling niche on Steam in 2026: 477 games tagged Shop Keeper came out between January 1 and September 27, against 65 in the same weeks of 2025. Idle games (Idler, +150%), cozy games (+143%) and automation games (+170%) are close behind. Steam as a whole grew 45% over the same weeks, so every niche below should be read against that.

Fast growth is not the same as bad odds, though. Of the 23 niches we counted, the one where games most often reached 1,000 reviews was Open World Survival Craft (28.3% of games released January 2024 to June 2025, against 4.2% across all of Steam), and it grew a modest 39%. The hardest was Precision Platformer: 983 games in the same cohort, 1.4% past 1,000 reviews.

This post puts all 23 side by side: how fast each niche is filling, how its games did, which niches combine good odds with calmer growth, and how long the queue of unreleased pages is. Each niche has its own page in the Steam Niche Index with sub-niches, price bands and recent breakouts.

How fast is Steam as a whole filling up?

Every niche below grows against a rising tide. Steam released 18,905 games in 2025, against 16,112 in 2024. By September 27, 2026 it had released 19,375, against 13,339 in the same weeks of 2025: +45%.

So a niche that grew about as fast as Steam did not get more crowded relative to the store; it just rode the tide. The interesting niches are the ones well above or well below it, and the split is almost even: 11 of the 23 niches grew faster than Steam’s 45%, and 12 grew slower, which means those 12 now make up a smaller share of Steam’s new releases than a year ago.

Which Steam niches are filling up fastest in 2026?

Releases from January 1 to September 27, 2026, against the same weeks of 2025:

Growth in releases, Jan 1 to Sep 27, 2026 vs same weeks of 2025
Shop Keeper (65 to 477)+634%
Bullet Heaven (65 to 329)+406%
Automation (304 to 822)+170%
Idler (626 to 1,566)+150%
Cozy (428 to 1,041)+143%
Roguelike Deckbuilder (164 to 316)+93%
Cooking (222 to 365)+64%
Tower Defense (402 to 652)+62%
Action Roguelike (957 to 1,505)+57%
Colony Sim (164 to 251)+53%

Bullet Heaven only became a Steam tag in the May 2026 tag overhaul, so part of its jump is developers adopting the new label. Treat it as a direction, not a size. Shop Keeper is older, but very few games carried it before 2024 (2 released in 2021), so some of its growth is also the label catching on rather than new shop games alone.

Three patterns stand out.

  • The management-sim family is where the flood is. Shop Keeper, Automation, Idler and Cozy all more than doubled. My read, and it is only a read: they share a loop (build something up, watch the numbers rise) that is cheap to prototype and easy to show in a short video, which is what lets a niche fill this quickly.
  • Roguelikes are still growing, just less. Roguelike Deckbuilder nearly doubled (+93%) and Action Roguelike added 57%, on a much bigger base: 1,505 action roguelikes so far this year.
  • The action and horror staples are losing share. Metroidvania grew 9%, Survival Horror 17%, Precision Platformer 17%, Souls-like 18%, all well below Steam’s 45%. They are still big, but each is a smaller slice of what Steam releases than it was a year ago.

Where do games in each niche actually succeed?

Growth tells you how crowded a niche is getting. It does not tell you how its games did. For that we need a fixed cohort: every game released January 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025, counted on September 27, 2026, so each had at least 14 months to collect reviews. Comparing this year’s releases with last year’s on reviews would only measure their age.

The share of each niche’s cohort that reached 1,000 user reviews (roughly $150,000 gross by the common rule of thumb):

Games reaching 1,000 reviews, released Jan 2024 to Jun 2025
Open World Survival Craft (138 games)28.3%
Colony Sim (255)13.7%
Bullet Heaven (107)13.1%
Cozy (661)11%
City Builder (574)10.5%
Souls-like (526)8.9%
Life Sim (1,058)8.6%
Automation (477)8.4%
Farming Sim (412)8%
Tactical RPG (553)5.4%
All of Steam (24,918)4.2%
Visual Novel (1,889)4%
Action Roguelike (1,849)3.5%
Tower Defense (810)3.5%
Precision Platformer (983)1.4%

Bullet Heaven’s rate comes from older games that players re-tagged after the tag appeared in May 2026, and players re-tag the games they know, so its rate is flattered more than most.

Every niche we measure is a niche on purpose: a recognisable kind of game with players who look for it. Most of them beat Steam’s 4.2%. One likely reason is that Steam’s total includes thousands of tiny releases that fit no niche at all. The niches that do not beat it are the most telling.

  • Precision Platformer is the hardest niche we measured. 983 games, 1.4% past 1,000 reviews, a median under 10 reviews. It is a niche a solo developer can build alone, and 702 games tagged Precision Platformer came out in 2025.
  • Action Roguelike and Tower Defense sit below Steam’s average. Both are big (1,849 and 810 games in the cohort) and both are growing fast in 2026. That combination is the one to fear: a flood of new games into a niche whose existing games already struggle.
  • Open World Survival Craft is the outlier the other way. 138 games, 28.3% past 1,000 reviews, a median of 149 reviews. It is also expensive to make (the median list price is $14.99, the highest of the 23), which likely explains much of it.

Which niches have better odds and calmer growth?

Put the two readings together. These niches beat the Steam hit rate by half again or more, while releasing no faster than the median niche (+39%, itself below Steam’s +45%):

NicheReached 1,000 reviewsvs SteamReleases 2026 vs same weeks of 2025
Open World Survival Craft28.3%6.7×90 vs 65 (+39%)
City Builder10.5%2.5×415 vs 328 (+27%)
Souls-like8.9%2.1×311 vs 264 (+18%)
Farming Sim8%1.9×361 vs 263 (+37%)
Boomer Shooter7.4%1.8×204 vs 160 (+28%)

That being said, calmer growth does not mean easy. Souls-likes and city builders are demanding to build well, and a player base that has played the best of the genre is hard to impress. What the table does say is that the odds in these niches are not being diluted by a 2026 flood the way Idler’s or Shop Keeper’s are.

How long is the queue of unreleased games?

Every niche also has pages that are live on Steam and not released yet. The total includes a lot of pages that will never launch, so the firmer number is the one with a real date in the next 90 days:

NicheUnreleased pagesDated within 90 daysA normal 90 days of 2025
Psychological Horror5,589351525
Cozy2,730333158
Idler2,625314235
Action Roguelike4,856255346
Automation1,858197113
Shop Keeper1,09411534
Bullet Heaven*75310226

“A normal 90 days of 2025” is the niche’s 2025 releases divided by four. Where the dated queue is well above it, the next three months will be more crowded than last year was: cozy (333 dated against a normal 158), shop keeping (115 against 34) and automation (197 against 113) all point that way. Psychological horror is the reverse: a huge backlog of pages, but fewer firm dates than its normal pace.

If you are launching in one of the busy niches in the next quarter, the launch date planner and the sale calendar help you avoid the busiest weeks.

How to use this for your own game

  1. Look up the niche you are actually in, not the one you would like to be in. Your community tags decide which niches Steam puts you in. The Steam Niche Checker reads your page’s tags and shows every niche and sub-niche you match.
  2. Read the sub-niche, not the headline. Inside Cozy, puzzle games reached 1,000 reviews 5.9% of the time and farming sims 27.8%. The niche pages break every niche down this way.
  3. Treat a doubling niche as a warning about next year’s odds. The hit rates above describe games that launched before the 2026 flood. An idle game launching now shares its year with 1,566 other idle releases so far, against 626 in the same weeks of 2025, and a shop-keeping game with 477 against 65.
  4. Do not pick a niche from this table alone. A 28% niche you cannot build well is worse than a 6% niche you can. The data narrows the choice; it does not make it.

How we counted

  • Source. Each niche is one Steam community tag, looked up by tag id and read page by page from Steam’s public store search on September 27, 2026. That covers games only (no DLC, soundtracks or software), on the US storefront with default content filters. For every niche the number of released games we parsed was within 1% of Steam’s own released count.
  • “All of Steam.” It is the same search with no tag, covering 54,392 games released since January 1, 2024.
  • Hit rates. They use the fixed January 2024 to June 2025 cohort. Review counts are what Steam’s search shows a US visitor, which may count English-language reviews only.
  • Tags and missing games. Community tags follow popularity, which flatters narrow tags. Delisted and age-restricted games are not in Steam’s default search. Niches overlap: one game can count in several.
  • Price. It is the undiscounted US list price on the day we counted, not the launch price.
  • Revenue. “1,000 reviews” is a proxy, not a revenue figure. There are no revenue estimates here.
